Transportation
Getting there
Two access routes: (1) From Mérida — drive or bus 4-5 hours to Encontrados town in Zulia state, then boat to the stilt villages of Ologá or Congo Mirador. (2) From Maracaibo — drive or bus 2-3 hours south to Encontrados or Santa Bárbara del Zulia, then boat. Most tours depart from Mérida (more developed tour infrastructure).
Once on site
From Encontrados or Santa Bárbara: boat (lancha or peñero) ~1-2 hours to Ologá or Congo Mirador stilt villages where you sleep. From village: small boat into the lightning zone after dark, ~30-60 minute ride to the convergence area.
Parking
Park your car at the tour operator's office in Mérida (free for tour guests) or at Encontrados/Santa Bárbara (paid lots, ~$5/day). Boats only beyond that point.

DIY vs hiring a tour
Technically you can DIY this — find the boat to Encontrados, negotiate a peñero captain to take you to Ologá, find a stilt-house family to host you. In practice almost nobody does, because the logistics are genuinely hard if you don't speak Spanish and don't know local boat captains. The tour ecosystem here is small (mostly run by 2-3 Mérida operators), priced fairly, and includes the captain's local knowledge of WHERE in the 250 km² lake the lightning is most active that night — which is the actual valuable knowledge. Going with a tour also funds the Wayuu and Zuliano stilt-village communities who maintain the palafitos. Strong recommend: take a tour. The price ($220-450 for budget-to-mid) is reasonable for a 2-3 day all-included experience that delivers one of Earth's most spectacular natural shows.
